Marleen Norman received her master's degree in social work from California State University, San Francisco, has been licensed  since 1973, and is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. She received two years' postgraduate training in analytical psychology at the C.G. Jung Institute, Los Angeles, where she also received training in sand play therapy. Additional specialized training includes Disaster Mental Health Services (through the American Red Cross) and advanced training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (through the EMDR Institute). She is in private practice with adults and adolescents in San Francisco.

Ms. Norman developed and supervised the counseling program for a multi-service agency for adolescents and their families (San Diego County), and the social services component for an acute gero-psychiatric unit within a skilled nursing facility (San Francisco). Her experience includes adoption services, residential treatment for adolescents, and acute psychiatric inpatient services for adolescents and adults. She has conducted stress management workshops and provided Critical Incident Debriefing of traumatic events in the Bay Area. Her areas of special interest are anxiety, depression, co-dependency, death\and dying issues (including survivors of suicide victims), mid-life and transition issues, stress management, survivors of physical and sexual abuse, and  performance anxiety (her undergraduate major is in theatre).

Short and long-term therapy are provided to individuals and couples. Regular office hours are weekdays, noon to 7:30 p.m. Same day appointments may be available. Both office locations are convenient to public transportation; her Post Street office is one block from Union Square. Phone calls are returned promptly, usually within two or three hours. If insurance is being used, claim forms will be submitted for you on a monthly basis.

Ms. Norman is a founding director of the California Coalition for Ethical Mental Health Care and served on its board for three years.
