Heidi Cary received her doctorate degree in clinical psychology at
the
California School of Professional Psychology, Alameda, in 2000. She
received
her master's degree in clinical psychology from John F. Kennedy
University,
Orinda, 1989, and has been licensed in California as a marriage and
family
therapist (MFC 31824) in a full time private practice in Corte Madera
since
1994. She has specialized training in attachment (intimate
relationships
in childhood and adulthood), divorce adjustment, loss, and crisis,
medical
hypnosis, and sandplay therapy.
For her doctoral dissertation Dr. Cary conducted a study of 53
divorced women and interviewed them in depth regarding their adjustment
to divorce. She said, "What I learned from this experience is about the
determination, courage, and motivation of persons to recover from
crisis, and about the influence
of earlier experiences on the choice of mates and adjustment to change"
.She
uses information from her study for her therapy groups for men and
women
on "Moving Beyond Divorce". She has given seminars in the Bay Area on
patterns
of relating and divorce adjustment. Her postgraduate training includes
work
with multi-ethnic college students, individual adults, couples and
families
with symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, separation and loss,
parenting
problems, and couples issues.
In private practice she works with children, families, individual
adults,
couples, and groups. For the past four years Dr. Cary has also
supervised
masters level interns at an agency in the community that serves
families.
She specializes in helping people adjust to crisis following losses or
divorce.
When she was asked how she would describe her practice, she said,
"focus
on understanding individuals from many aspects of their lives, teaching
them
how to improve their connection with others, helping them reach their
goals,
and supporting their personal growth".
